Poppin' Bottles -Tips from a wedding photographer!

As a photographer, we often find ourselves in situations where we are called upon to capture the moment of popping a champagne bottle. Popping champagne bottles can make for some fantastic photo and video opportunities. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind to make sure you capture the moment perfectly and safely.

Here are some tips on popping champagne bottles from a photographer:

  • Chill the champagne-

The first step to a successful champagne pop is to chill the bottle properly. This not only ensures that the champagne is at the perfect temperature but also reduces the pressure inside the bottle, making it easier to control the cork.

  • Remove the foil and loosen the wire cage-

Before popping the champagne, remove the foil and loosen the wire cage around the cork. Hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle and make sure the cork is facing away from people and objects. Don’t aim toward the photographer!

  • Firmly grip the cork and twist-

Once the wire cage is loosened, place a firm grip on the cork with one hand, and hold the base of the bottle with the other. Twist the bottle, not the cork, until the cork starts to loosen. This technique will help you control the cork and prevent it from flying off uncontrollably.

  • Place your thumb on the mouth of the bottle-

Once the cork is loose, pull it off and immediately cover the mouth with your thumb (as you would with a yard hose)! Once it’s completely covered, gently shake the bottle! Your thumb will cause the spray to go EVERYWHERE! As a photographer, this is when I take my shots!

  • Celebrate and enjoy-

After the perfect shot is captured, it's time to enjoy the champagne and celebrate the moment. Remember, popping champagne is all about having fun and celebrating, so don't take it too seriously. With these tips, you can capture the moment perfectly and safely, ensuring that everyone has a fantastic time.
